New Wheels

Friday, February 26, 2010

I finally picked up the race wheels from the shop, where they’ve been getting glued.  They are Planet X 82mm front and 101mm rear with Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tubulars.  I weighed them at 812 grams for the front and 1072 grams for the rear.  The tires come in at 239 grams each.

Week one of the 16 week program leading up to Rev3 Olympic the first week of June is in the books.  Not a perfect start, but got most scheduled workouts in.  I’ve decided that snowboarding will replace any workout.  It’s a long season and I see no reason to miss out on something I really enjoy for the sake of a few workouts.

Snowboarding Report

Sundown:

Another holiday weekend, so decided to stay local.  It worked out great with warmer temperatures and light crowds.  Sundown is a smaller (650 vertical) hill that is only about 15 miles from Hartford.  Started the day with a few runs thru the large terrain park.  Some of the features are too big for me, but I caught some air off the ramps before the park got busy with riders who know what they’re doing.

From there headed over to the beginner hill where they have a small terrain park with a small table top, a rail, a roller and a cannon.  Great place to practice some technical skills.  I also worked quite a bit on riding switch, since they also have a nice flat beginner trail.  Was able to actually get on my switch toe-side for the first time and link some turns.

Wrapped up the day with some runs of the summit.  Great snow conditions on all the trails, and the warmer temperatures really soften things up nicely.

Wachusett:

Sunday night headed up to Wachusett to meet up with my brother for some night riding.  The Sunday night at the end of the school vacation week ended up being not very crowded and they even ended up taking down the lift corrals halfway thru the night.

Some pics from the Summit before it got dark.  TJ on the left, me on the right.

TJ took over the camera and hooked me up with some nice action shots.  Wachusett grooms every trail between the day and night sessions.  We took advantage by absolutely blasting down the trails at mach speed.  Here I am ripping down.

Also, put my switch riding practice to use and then we made our way to the mini terrain park. DSCF2466

They had a small jump and a couple of small boxes.  It’s a little tough to see with the darkness closing in, but here are some action shots:

Was a great night out, and really enjoyed carving up the mountain with my brother.  I’m hoping we can get in at least one more night together before the end of the season.

Feeling good, feeling bad

The last 12 days started with an illness, I was sick for all of last weekend and didn't do anything. I started to feel better early last week and mad it to the pool one day, ran another and got on the bike trainer as well. This saturday I was signed up with Rico to do the run for Haiti, my goal was 36:00 (9:00/miles), I finished in 36:11. Rico thinks if i had a watch on I would have broke 36:00. Sunday I went for a bike ride with Rico and Mike, i felt very week. I couldnt keep up with them at all but put in 35 miles and gave the legs a workout.

Ran yesterday and swimming tonight. This saturday I'm bringing my car in for service so maybe I'll use the downtime to get in a long run.

2010 4 mile Haiti Run in Central Park

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

This past weekend I did the 4 mile Haiti Run in Central Park. My Goal was to break 30 minutes and do a 7:30 pace. Based on one of my best training runs I had done this past Thursday of 6 miles in 45 minutes I thought it was achievable (training run was on a treadmill with no incline)

The start was crazy with over 9,000 people registered. After fighting and dancing around everyone at the start of the run, i was still on track after two miles with a time of exactly 15 minutes. Mile 2-3.25 was all uphill for the most part, after mile three my pace fell off and i was at 23.10 minutes. I would need to break a 7min mile to finish under 30min. I just didn't have it finishing the 4 mile race in 30:50min, averaging a pace of 7:42.

This was my first race at any distance where i finished under an 8min mile pace. I was very happy with the results and feel the training is paying dividends.

Feb 2nd 2010 Empire State Building Run Up

Monday, February 22, 2010

I would recommend this event to everyone. You will never look at a tall syscraper the same way again...lol. It was much harder than you could imagine to climb 86 floor and almost 1,600 stairs. I had no expectation of time since i really had no idea what to expect.

At the start of the race i immediately start to run up the stairs at a pace that i thought i could sustain. I was passing a lot of people and i should of known right away i was pacing myself to fast because i know i'm not a strong runner. I hit floor 10 and i felt my heart was going to jump out of my body. If i had my heart rate monitor it would of read 105%. I didn't want to stop and wanted to maintain some sort of fast walk up but even that proved to be extremely difficult. It was a painful event to finish in 19.09 minutes. I'm glad i did it and i would love the opportunity to torture myself again next year but I will train for it and will pace myself more appropriately.

Thanks for reading
Rico

Week Summary

Swim – 3550 yards

Got back on track with a better, more consistent week of training.  This is the last week of the prep period of training – now on to Week 1 of the Rev 3 training plan.

Race Calendar Update

I registered for the Max O’s 5k on March 14th and the Wrentham Duathlon on April 18th this week to lock in those races.  I also registered for the Esprit Montreal Olympic on September 11th.  This race looks pretty cool and very spectator friendly.  The swim is on the Olympic rowing course, the bike is laps on the Formula One track and the run is around the swim course.  They also run a sprint, a half iron and full iron race on the same day.  The race is 7 weeks out from my priority race for the year – Miami 70.3.  I’ve been looking for an Olympic 6-7 weeks out so I’m happy to have added this to the schedule.

Snowboarding Report

Got in one day of snowboarding this weekend, at Okemo.  Again very cold and blustery, but sunny.  Got there early and got in 4 quick runs off the main quad before it got busy.

Then the mob descended.  This is the singles line!

Needless to say, it was time to try other areas.  Checked out the South Face but it was even more windy, so made my way over to Jackson Gore for some lunch.  After lunch did quite a few laps thru the mini terrain park.  Was able to ride some rails and boxes successfully – although I took a few spills as well.  Here are some picks of the massive features – notice the average age of people doing these:

After a few laps there, did a few runs off the Solitude Quad, including 3 runs on the boardercross course.  With sun fading, called it a day around 3:30.

Snowboarding report:

After the monsoon on Monday, went with Jiminy this week as they are notorious for grooming every trail every day.  With the rapid drop in temperatures after the rain, that was the only chance of good snow.  Surfaces were in great conditions on all trails.  Very cold day, but again no wind so it was tolerable.

-6 upon arrival.

I think many people took a late start, so got in a few quick runs on perfect corduroy.

Light week

Last week was spent mostly recovering from my first half marathon. My legs were VERY Sore for several days. I did manage to get in the pool on wednesday, and was finally able to run again on Friday. This weekend was a complete bust for me, I was as lazy as ever, but I got back in the pool last night and plan on running this evening.

I managed to sign up for the Wyckoff/Franklin lakes YMCA tri last night. Apparently you can not sign up on line so I had to drive over there after I got home and drop off my registration. It's a popular local race so I wanted to make sure I was in.
