Weekend Computrainer Workout

Sunday, March 14, 2010

This was the last weekend to get a long bike ride in before Ironman California 70.3. Unfortunately we were hit with a tsunami of rainfall. Thankfully Mike Kimelmen just purchased a Computrainer. He was nice enough to let me use it Saturday and he downloaded the Cali 70.3 bike course. I managed to complete the course through about mile 45 after the last major hill. It was a great workout with lots of information to keep me motivated and focused. I can barely last 45 min on an indoor trainer and i managed to stay on the trainer for 2:30hrs. It could be that it was a new toy that kept me motivated. I would be curious if i would have the same level of motivation after a few weeks of use. From my first time experience i would highly recommend the purchase of this toy of course that is if $1,700 is burning a hole in your pocket and you just dont know where to spend it.

2010 Murray Todd Half Marathon Run

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Waking up at 4:45am never gets easy. At first I wanted to bail on this race and just take out my bike given the forecast was for 60 degree temps but Marc held me to the original plan. I had rode my bike for 45 hard miles the day before with my brother, Mike K and Ronel and so I planned on a 2:00hr half marathon run and was treating this event as a nice easy training run.

Of course that never does happen, I found myself running 8:10 pace through the first three miles, it didn't feel hard and I felt strong. My legs were a bit sore and tired from the bike the day before but nothing major. When I hit mile 7 it was roughly 58min. I had been talking to two other runners that i had ran with since the start of the race and was not paying attention to time. It was looking like i was well on my way to breaking 1hr 50 min which had been my goal two months prior but failed to accomplish. I pushed a little harder the last 6 miles and finished with a PR of 1:46:32. I was extremely happy with my results.

I may need to recalculate my goal time for the run in the California Ironman 70.3. My goal time was 2:00 hrs but may revise to 1:55 hrs.

The Pounds, oh the Pounds

So in the middle of my run this weekend I finally came to the realization that if I want to get faster I will (aside from training obviously) have to lose significant weight. I never thought of myself as a huge guy, but in this sport I might as well be Godzilla. I am 5'8" and currently weigh 192 lbs, much of which is in my upper body and I carry it around with me on runs and rides. My goal for the next few months is to lose 20 pounds. I haven't been lighter than about 180 anytime in the last 10 years so it will not be easy, but I feel I have to shed the weight. So the goal is 172, I haven't set a time limit for myself but at 2 lbs a week that is just shy of 3 months, so lets say end of June.

Last time I lost a lot of weight I started at a much higher number, I was 213 and got down to 183 in 4 months. I have a feeling this time will be harder.

The Good, The Bad, The Run

Monday, March 8, 2010

Yesterday Rico and I did the E Murray Todd Half Marathon in Lincroft NJ. I was a beautiful day for a run. This was my second half marathon, and there was good and bad.

The Good: I finished without having to walk
The Bad: It still hurts to run that long
The Good: I was about 6 minutes faster than last time
The Bad: I am still really slow
The Good: 9:49 pace for first half
The Bad: 10:26 pace for second half
The Good: Not nearly as sore as I was last time
The Bad: 39th out of 41 in my division
The Good: Felt pretty good until mile 8
The Bad: Felt awful miles 9-11
The Good: Felt good for the finish
The Good/Bad: I get to try again April 18th (Anyone want to join?)

End Result - total time 2:12:42 - 10:08 Pace
